Chapter Thirteen
Mr. Raymond’s House
“Hello Mr. Raymond,” Marc spoke into the telephone. “This is Marc Augenbech.”
A grunt of annoyance came from the other end of the line, as Marc continued. “As you might know, I'm one of the people involved in the investigation of the paranormal disturbances at your house.”
“I didn't know. Why would I know that?” the old man answered abruptly.
“We require your authorization for your niece Lara to be interviewed at her school by one of the scientists. So, I wondered if I might drop by this afternoon with the release papers.”
“I have no time for you,” the old man raised his voice in immediate hysteria. “Holly Driscoll is coming by for an important meeting and I'll be busy.” There was a hesitation on the line, then suddenly, Raymond changed his tone. “Pity you insist on being so difficult and unpleasant,” the old man's voice cooed in a mockery of sorrow. “I know you and Holly would have really hit it off.”
Marc remained silent for a long moment before he got back to the original topic. “It would only take a minute to drop off the papers, and perhaps we could have a chance to talk.”
“What about?” Raymond asked coyly.
“Well, we got off to a bad start the other day, and I thought it might be a good idea if we started over.”
A hoarse wheezing laugh filled Marc's ear.
“Fine. I am told I have a tolerant and forgiving nature for a complete son of a bitch,” the old man roared. “See you at one-thirty. That should leave us a moment or two before Holly and I leave for a smart, late lunch. Oh and don't forget,” the hoarse voice informed him as a calculated afterthought, “we'll be around the pool, so bring a swimsuit. I know how modest you are.”
